Becoming an FAA Aircraft Dispatcher.
Knowledge-test preparation is one step.
You must be at least 21 to take the Aircraft Dispatcher knowledge test and at least 23 to be eligible for the certificate. Certification also requires the specified English-language ability, knowledge and practical tests, and qualifying experience or approved training.
GroundSchool prepares you for the ADX knowledge test. It does not itself constitute an FAA-approved dispatcher certification course.
Certificate and eligibility: §§65.51 and 65.53
An Aircraft Dispatcher certificate is required when acting in that certificated role in the operations covered by the rule. The certificate requirements include age 23, ability to read, speak, write, and understand English, the required knowledge and practical tests, and the experience or training requirements of §65.57.
The minimum age for taking the knowledge test is 21. Read §65.53.
Knowledge areas: §65.55
- Applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and air-carrier operating requirements.
- Meteorology, fronts, clouds, icing, upper-air data, wind shear, and microbursts.
- Weather and NOTAM collection, distribution, interpretation, and use; weather products and National Weather Service functions.
- Navigation under instrument conditions, air traffic control procedures, terminal and en route operations, and instrument departures and approaches.
- Aircraft loading, weight and balance, performance charts, graphs, tables, formulas, and calculations.
- Aerodynamics and aircraft performance in normal and abnormal conditions.
- Human factors, aeronautical decision-making and judgment, and crew resource management, communication, and coordination.
The rule also addresses evidence of a qualifying knowledge-test pass. Read §65.55.
Qualifying experience and approved courses: §65.57
The experience route ordinarily requires at least two years of qualifying experience within the three years before application, in one or a combination of the roles listed in the rule.
- Military aircraft operations as a pilot, flight navigator, or meteorologist.
- Part 121 operations as a supervised assistant in dispatching, pilot, flight engineer, or meteorologist.
- Aircraft operations as an air traffic controller or Flight Service Station specialist.
- Other duties that provide equivalent experience acceptable under the rule.
The alternative is the required graduation statement from an approved Aircraft Dispatcher course. Read §65.57 for the complete criteria and documentation requirements.
The practical test: §65.59
Dispatcher certification also requires a practical test covering the applicable dispatcher skills. Passing the ADX written test is not the same as completing the practical test or receiving the certificate.
