Step by Step Guide to BACKING UP your logbook data
Category: Safelog Pilot Logbook

Question / Issue:
Step by Step Guide to Backup

Solution:
This is a step by step guide to backing up your Safelog Logbook data.

We took a lot of time doing this and the restore guide, so please read it carefully! Every step matters.

This guide shows how to back up the data to the "My Documents" folder on your local PC. However, for safe keeping, you will probably want to back the key file up elsewhere, such as to CD-ROM, to the internet, or elsewhere. It is beyond the scope of this document to teach you how to do that, but please remember that computers can and do crash, so it is very important that you keep a backup of your data in a place seperate from the computer where you are running Safelog.

Please also note: DO NOT BACK UP YOUR DATA TO FLOPPY DISC. Not only are floppy discs outdated, unreliable technology, but they simply do not have the space to accomodate Safelog data. As a rough estimate, plan on needing at least 5 megabytes of space to back up your data (though many logbooks files are smaller). Even 5 megabytes, which corresponds to a pretty long logbook, is tiny compared to the size of a hard drive, but is huge compared to the size of a floppy disc.

Disc space is cheap. Your time is expensive. Make backups early and often and whenever there is any doubt, make multiple backups.

Ok.. to make a backup:

  • Step 1: Start Safelog
Start the safelog program. Simple enough!

  • Step 2: Click on "Backup"
    Not hard, right?

  • Step 3: Click on "Click here to backup..."

  • Step 4: Verify that the folder selected is where you want to back up to, and verify that the filename is something you like (the defaults should be ok for most people). Then, click on "Save."

  • Step 5: Success!

That's all there is to it!
